Virtual Escort

The Virtual Escort feature allows you to set an optional destination address and timer. As you travel to your destination the countdown timer begins. When you arrive safely at your destination simply stop the Virtual Escort. If you do not arrive and turn off the escort an emergency alert will be sent to the POM Response Center on your behalf.

Due to the limitations of certain smart phone a phone call may not be automatically initiated through the POM device. Instead, a dispatcher will call your phone to determine the situation. If dispatch is unable to reach you, they will send emergency responders to your location.

If you forget to turn off your virtual escort, but arrive at your destination safely, simply let the dispatcher know and they will mark the alert as a false alarm.
There are no penalties for sending a false alarm. We’re all here to keep you safe!

Phone Settings & Permissions

Details about phone settings, permissions and location sharing

The POM system requires certain settings and permissions be enabled on your phone such as microphone access, location sharing permission, bluetooth access and cellular or WiFi service.

Location Sharing Permission: When creating your POM account and pairing your POM device you will be prompted to allow location sharing permissions. In order for the system to work properly, “Always” share location must be selected. To clarify, this does not mean that your location is always being shared. This means that your phone will always allow location sharing when requested by the POM app, but the app only asks to send your location during an emergency alert. By selecting “Only While Using App” your phone would have to be unlocked and the app must be at the forefront of the screen in order for your phone to grant permission to share location. When location is shared with our POM Response Center, they will be able to see a location pin on a map. Your location will update during the entirety of the emergency alert. Once our dispatchers have resolved the alert, the map showing your location is removed from their database and your phone will no longer send location data.

Microphone Access: During set-up the POM app will ask for access to your microphone. This will allow the POM device to be used as an extension of your phone. You will be able to speak directly into the POM device when using the Auto Call feature, or when communicating with the POM Response Center during an emergency alert.

Bluetooth Access: The POM device is connected to your phone via Bluetooth. For this reason your phone’s Bluetooth must be turned on in your phones settings, and your POM device must be paired and connected in order to function properly.

Cellular or WiFi connection: The POM app sends information from your profile as well as GPS location information to a live dispatcher when you trigger an emergency alert. This requires cellular data or WiFi service, however only the minimal amount of service (one bar) is needed to send information to the POM Response Center. When you may not have enough service for a clear phone call, as long as you have at least one bar of service, your location and profile information will be received by a dispatcher who can direct emergency services to you.

In order for the POM system to work properly, you must enable certain permissions and settings on your phone.

How does POM Safe locate me?

POM Safe uses GPS location technology to locate you in the event of an emergency.

When you trigger an emergency alert either from the POM device or from the app, your GPS location is sent to a POM Response Dispatcher via cellular or WiFi connection. Your location is only shared during an emergency alert.

During an emergency alert our dispatcher will view a map containing live-updating GPS location pins. If you are changing location during an alert our dispatchers will be able to relay this information to local emergency responders.

Once the emergency alert is resolved, the map containing your location pins is no longer available to view by dispatchers in the POM Safe Response Center.

Emergency Alerts

Emergency alerts

You can also initiate an emergency alert by using the Virtual Walking Escort feature in the POM app. For more information, please see section on “Virtual Escort.”

In addition to GPS location information sent from your phone, our 24/7 POM Response Center dispatchers will receive profile information. You can create your profile in the POM app and can include information such as a picture of yourself, physical descriptors, medications, medical conditions, emergency contacts and more.

The POM Safe connects via Bluetooth with the POM Safe User’s smartphone and in an emergency can be tapped three times to place a phone call to the POM Safe Response Center, sending GPS location, profile information, and initiating voice communication.

Our dispatchers are monitoring 24/7 and in an emergency can relay important information to emergency responders local to your location.

In an emergency the POM Safe can act as an extension of your phone. It is equipped with a microphone and speaker so that you can speak with a POM Response dispatcher without needing to unlock your phone or dial numbers. You also have the option of placing your POM Safe in “silent” mode so that no voices, or noises can be heard through the POM Safe. This allows you to use the POM Safe as a type of silent alarm and will not alert anyone around that you have requested help. While in silent mode a phone call will still be initiated through the POM to our dispatchers, however you will not be able to hear them, but they will still be able to hear you. You can easily toggle between “silent” and “loud” mode in the settings menu on the POM Safe app.

Enterprise accounts also have the option of using our 24/7 POM Safe Response Center dispatch service or their own in-house security dispatch. In-house security dispatch centers will have access to a custom dispatch web portal that will monitor emergency alerts, show the location of the alert on a live-updating map, show profile information and emergency contacts during active alerts.
